The water/shockproof HD HERO Wide sports a 170-degree lens, which is over three times wider than its popular competitor, the Standard-Definition Oregon Scientific ATC5K. The wider lens definitely smoothes out the shakes and takes in more scenery, but it also allows for more inclusion of what the camera is mounted on. Being able to see things like the user’s hands on their handlebars, for example, really make viewers feel like they’re part of the action.

GoPro offers a wide variety of mounting systems, which will let you put the camera on your helmet, handlebar, RC model, automobile, surfboard, chest or wrist. A peephole-type viewfinder allows you to roughly line up your shots, although on future models it would be nice to see a built-in LCD screen, so you can review your footage on location – apparently an add-on screen for the current model is coming soon. If worn on a helmet, some users might find the camera’s boxy shape to be a little more obtrusive than traditional cylindrical helmetcams, such as the HD VholdR Contour.

The simple little HERO is good on power, being able to shoot for up to two and a half hours on its rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Over four hours of video can be recorded at a maximum resolution of 1080p on a 32GB SD memory card (not included). There’s certainly a fish eye-ish look to the picture, but it’s appropriate for the subject matter. The image quality survives being uploaded to YouTube, and is excellent when viewed in its native format on your computer or TV. Starting at $US300, or just $190 for the Standard-Def version, you can’t go wrong.

The current American patent system is based on first-to-invent as opposed to first-to-file as in most other countries. What this means is in the United States, as long as the small inventor:

• has idea(s) that are new, i.e., unique
• idea(s) that are not obvious
• properly records their idea(s)
• has their idea(s) properly witnessed and signed
• practices due-diligence in pursuing their ideas

They, and they alone, are the owner of an idea that is worthy of a patent.

The small inventor can have many ideas that meet the above criteria, but many do not have the financial resources to file a non-provisional patent application (about $10,000 to $15,000) to properly claim their ownership for the idea and turn it into an issued patent. Currently, one of the main ways they can practice due-diligence on their invention is to file a Provisional Application for Patent, which only cost $100 to file. This means that theProvisional Application for Patent will no longer exist. As a result, the small inventor with limited financial resources will no longer have an appropriate mechanism to practice due-diligence without substantial expense. Then, time will pass without the small inventor being able to prove they are practicing due-diligence. Sooner or later, the large corporations will stumble across the idea (even a blind hog roots an acorn every now and then) and end up patenting it before the small inventor. Under this system, the small inventor will likely remain a small POOR inventor.

Small companies and small independent inventors are the heart and soul of this country. Do we want to relinquish innovation to the large corporations. I don’t think so! Please help stop this pending legislation.

Developing nations walked out of the conference yesterday, accusing Denmark of trying to kill the Kyoto Protocol. Thousands of protesters were arrested outside the Bella Centre in the wake of the walkout, and Sarah Palin called for President Obama to boycott the summit. President Obama will appear at the summit on Thursday after rescheduling his participation from Dec. 9, saying he can be more productive on the last day of the conference.

Talks resumed today, with key world leaders on the agenda. “We are at a critical moment. These are momentous decisions. The outcome hangs in the balance,” said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, “We will not be forgiven by future generations if we do not come up with agreement.”

The Kyoto Protocol, the only legally binding agreement on climate change, was never ratified by the United States and does not include China. The key issue at the Copenhagen summit is to decide whether or not to keep the Kyoto Protocol or start from scratch. Beyond the question of its very existence, a rift has grown between developed and undeveloped nations over how much the rich, CO2-producing nations should pay to help poor countries conform to mandated changes.

Electrolux has released its own study showing the dramatic reduction on CO2 emissions achieved by replacing outdated appliances. According to the study, the city of Copenhagen could reduce its environmental impact by 56,402 tons of CO2 emissions annually if every household replaced household appliances more than ten years old with new, energy efficient models.

“The electricity savings would mean that all households in Copenhagen could have a 60-watt light bulb on all day and night for 89 days,” states Sundström, “The electricity bill for each household could also be reduced by DKK 813 per year.” In dollars, that’s $159.

Replacing old household appliances is one of the global initiatives that potentially offer the largest CO2 savings compared to costs, according to a survey conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2009. In Europe alone, CO2 emissions could be reduced by approximately 20 million tons per year through appliance replacement, equal to emissions from around 11 coal plants, or 6% of Kyoto’s target for the EU.

Electrolux has set a goal to reduce energy consumption in the production of their appliances by 15 percent by the end of this year and an additional reduction of 15 percent by 2012.

And while owner Roman Abramovich has lost an estimated 3 billion UK pounds in the current financial crisis, word is that he’s still sparing no expense on his biggest and best toy yet.

Abramovich will need as many as 70 crew members to run the Eclipse, which also features two helipads, 11 guest cabins, two swimming pools (one of which can be drained and converted into a dance floor), three launch boats, an aquarium and a mini-submarine that can dive to 50 meters below the ocean surface.

The billionaire’s master bedroom will be armor-plated and fitted with bulletproof glass, as will the bridge. Missile detection systems will warn the crew of any incoming rockets, and there’s a bunch of anti-intruder, anti-bugging and other security systems on board – which might come in handy if Russia qualifies for the Soccer World Cup in 2010. Should Abramovich decide to take the Eclipse for a spin down to South Africa to watch, this gargantuan pleasure craft would make a tasty prize for the increasingly bold Somali pirates that work Africa’s East Coast.

But it’s the Eclipse’s anti-paparazzi system that’s stirring up the most interest. Abramovich and his ex-model girlfriend Daria Zhukova are so keen not to appear in tabloid spy shots that he has fitted the Eclipse with an innovative laser system that is said to be able to detect the CCDs of digital cameras and blind them with laser bursts – rendering any photos useless, presumably without destroying the cameras.

The anti-paparazzi system won’t be permanently activated, so Abramovich’s guests will be able to take happy snaps while on board – but if security personnel see a nearby vessel and suspect that there are photographers on board, it can be quickly switched on.

This kind of protection, of course, will do little but stir up the interest of the most hardcore paparazzi – and presumably the system is useless against good old film cameras. But it’s an indication of just how annoying such intrusions must be when you’re one of the world’s richest men, riding on the world’s biggest private yacht with your supermodel girlfriend. Sorry Roman, but I’m not sure if I can drum up a whole lot of sympathy here.
